Victoria

Michigan State University - East Lansing, Michigan

MSU’s Breslin Student Events Center hosts over 185 events a year, including all home men’s and women’s basketball games as well as all academic orientation and commencement ceremonies. The celebration of sports is a common thread of Universities across the nation. It was important to me however, that the meaning behind the artwork celebrate an equally important milestone while attending college: Academic achievement. Located in the SW corner of the exterior plaza to the Breslin Center, “Victoria” emerges from the landscape as a monumental gateway to the west end of MSU’s campus. Constructed of polished stainless steel pipe, and pvd coated stainless steel metal panel, the sculptures (7) spear-like forms are harmoniously joined giving the structure an appearance that is naturally Spartan spiritual. Interactions of the high quality materials with both natural and artificial light give life to the artwork’s celebratory torch-like qualities and provide a one-of-a-kind urban experience.
